ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - St. Petersburg Police officials say an officer was seriously injured during the arrest of a reckless driver.

According to a statement from police, the driver had sped away from a traffic stop late Friday before encountering officers in the Violent Crimes Task Force, who threw tire-puncturing devices into the road.

Authorities say a 16-year-old boy jumped from the car as it rolled on flattened tires.

According to police, one undercover officer jumped into the car as it hit an unoccupied Pinellas County Sheriff's Office vehicle. Authorities say the officer's gun accidentally discharged in the collision, and the bullet struck his hand.

Police say the officer is hospitalized with injuries that are serious but not life-threatening.

The statement says the 16-year-old faces multiple charges, including resisting arrest without violence.
