ATLANTA, GA (RNN) - A police officer in Georgia went the extra mile to help a 12-year-old girl who was caught trying to steal shoes for her younger sister.

Officer Che Milton was responding to a call from a Family Dollar employee who said the young girl was trying to steal a $2 pair of shoes, the Atlanta Police Department said.

The girl has four siblings and said that her family could not afford shoes for all of them, so she wanted to get a pair for her 5-year-old sister.

Milton talked to the girl and took her home, curious about her living conditions.

Milton was devastated upon walking inside the home. There were not enough beds for all the children and one sofa was the only furniture there.

The mother told him that she did not work because she could not afford day care, and that her husband doesn't make much money.

Milton noticed that there was not much food in the house so he bought pizza and drinks for the family, paying out of his own pocket.

He, along with others are now working to improve the family’s living situation.

Police are accepting donations to help the family at designated drop-off locations in Atlanta.
