Police: Man Admitted to Shooting 4 Dogs he Couldn't Care for

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. (AP) — A Peachtree City man is facing misdemeanor animal cruelty charges after police say he shot and killed his four dogs.

News outlets report that 72-year-old Richard McAllister was arrested Jan. 21 after police got a tip that a resident had canine bodies in trash bags.

A police report says that McAllister told police he shot his animals on Jan. 19 because he couldn't care for them or find any other way to get rid of them.

Fayette County Animal Control Director Rani Rathburn tells WGCL-TV (http://bit.ly/1PkJpBD ) that even though animal shelters are frequently full, there are always alternatives.

Police say you can only put an animal down if it's a threat to you or your livestock.
