TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Do you know your children’s cell phone numbers without checking your contact list?

More importantly: Do your children know your number without looking it up?

The Tallahassee Police Department is reminding both parents and children to memorize important numbers in times of emergency.

They say that many students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School left their cell phones behind in their book bags when law enforcement officers were moving them to safety during the school shooting.

When trying to reunite them with their parents at the safe zone, one of the main issues was that students didn't have their parent’s phone numbers memorized.

"We have grown accustomed to not having to remember numbers," TPD wrote in a social media post. "The good news is this is an easy fix."

They are reminding you to take a few minutes each to commit the numbers of your loved ones to memory because you never know when you may need them.
