Police dog dies in officer's hot car in Florida

(RNN) - An investigation is underway after a police dog died on Friday in a car while an officer was in a courthouse in Melbourne, FL. 

 A Sebastian officer found Diesel dead in the vehicle outside a Brevard County courthouse, according to WKMG. Temperatures were in the upper 80s at the time, the report said.

The K-9 had been with the department about a year. The Sebastian Police  Department acknowledged the dog’s death in a Facebook post on Tuesday. 

“Our entire department is saddened by Diesel’s tragic death. The situation is being investigated by the Melbourne Police Department and when their investigation is over, an administrative investigation will occur here with the Sebastian Police Department,” the post said. 

It is not immediately known how long the animal was in the car.
