THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WTXL) - Thomasville police are cracking down on property crimes.
The city's rate for that type of crime is higher than the state average.
Property crime in Thomasville continues to be an issue for police, but this year, those numbers are down significantly.
Property crimes include robbery, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson.
In 2017, there were more than a thousand of these crimes but as of Dec.7 of this year, Thomasville police said there are just 831 with just a few weeks left in 2018.
"It was high last year, but we have put in place in some things that kind of not only prevent it, but we have also solved a lot of property crimes," said Major Wade Glover.
Despite the decline, Thomasville is still above the state average in property crimes per 1,000 people, according to the website Neighborhood Scout.
And although there was a decrease in property crimes as a whole,Glover said there was an increase in stealing what's inside vehicles.
"Our citizens even though we have educated them are still seeing a lot of vehicles that are being left unlocked, and so a lot of guns have been stolen from these vehicles.," said Glover.
With property crimes down more than 21 percent as of this week, Major Glover said adding more child activities during the summer helped decrease one of the most active times for property crimes the year before.
"We are more involved and we have officers involved with several programs within our community that keep our children busy doing other things besides being mischievous," said Glover.
