PERRY, FL (WTXL) - A man is in jail after taking police on a high speed chase through Perry.
Derak Cook was arrested on charges of fleeing and alluding police, aggravated battery of a motor vehicle, driving on a suspended license and possession of a controlled substance on Wednesday, according to the Perry Police Department.
Authorities say Cook's family attempted to get Cook help under the Marchman Act before he took his Grandmother's car on the chase.
The Marchman Act provides voluntary and involuntary assessments of a person believed to be abusing substances such as drugs or alcohol according to the Escambia Clerk of Courts.
Before Cook could be served with the act, police say Cook took the car and went on a high speed chase with officers.
Cook was caught and arrested after a head-on crash on the corner of Jefferson Street and Julia Street. Police say his bond was set at $53,000.
There were drugs found on Cook at the time of his arrest but authorities say they are still waiting on lab results to determine what kind.
Captain Nellie Walker explains that the area has been having a small problem with synthetic drugs and that this is not the first instance of families coming to police concerned about their loved ones.
