TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - To best serve the homeless community, many people are spending their day looking for those who are shelterless.
WTXL ABC 27's Jada Williams was live Tuesday morning where those people are meeting up for a Point In Time Count.
Volunteers will come here Tuesday in waves to help the Big Bend Continuum of Care and other groups that work with the homeless for the Point In Time Count.
The count happens every January as a requirement by HUD.
Volunteers go out throughout the Big Bend in search of the unaccounted for shelterless people living in the woods, in cars, in parks and other places.
The findings from the count helps the community understand the scope of homelessness and adopt data driven strategies to find shelter and aid for the homeless.
Jacob Reiter is executive director of the Kearney Center.
"It's important for us locally because it gives us a chance to reflect on statistics as far as people's reported reasons for homelessness, what their needs are so that we can figure out how to build needs around that," he said.
The volunteers will also be providing hygiene kits and a $5 gift card for everyone that they survey this week.
While it is too late to participate in the point in time count, the Big Bend CESC is also looking for volunteers.
