TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-- Florida First Lady Ann Scott hosted children, advocates and state officials at the governor's mansion on Thursday.

The event was the kickoff of Child Abuse Prevention Month, aimed at getting people, businesses, and civic and community groups involved in helping children.

Department of Children and Families Secretary Mike Carroll says everyday acts of kindness can make a tremendous difference to a child.

"Every child has a light within them, and that's what makes it so fun to be around kids all the time. It is really our job to make sure that light within them, that thing inside them that makes every child unique and special, that is what we are really protecting."

The campaign is part of a national movement to change the way people think about their roles in preventing child abuse.
