DEKALB COUNTY, GA (WSB/CNN) – A pharmacy owner in the Atlanta area fought back after a woman sprayed him with mace and another pointed a gun at him in an attempted holdup.
When Dr. Mba Kalu found himself face-to-face with a gun on the afternoon of April 24, he says he felt he had to act quickly.
He says his daughter was in the back of the PCI Pharmacy when three women walked in and one pulled out a weapon.
"That was priority on my mind. I just had to do what I had to do to protect everybody,” Kalu said. "It's either they shoot you, or you are going to have to fight them."
Another woman grabbed mace and sprayed Kalu in the face, but it didn’t stop him wrestling the gun away from the first suspect.
All three women took off running out the door.
Kalu says he just opened the pharmacy last June, and this is the second robbery he’s experienced. In December, he says three men burst into the store, wearing masks, carrying guns and demanding drugs.
"In this field, it's something that's already anticipated because of the ongoing opium abuse,” Kalu said.
Police say the three female robbers and the three male robbers are still on the run.
Employees at neighboring businesses can’t help but wonder what’s next.
“Honestly, it's frightening,” one employee said. "We don't know what's going to come through our doors, so it's really scary right now."
Kalu is now keeping the door locked at all times and buzzing in customers. He also plans to order bulletproof glass for behind the counter, as well as a gun.
