FRANKLIN COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A 52-year-old man is in critical condition after a distracted driver tried to pick up a dropped cell phone and hit him.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that David Freeman, 38, was driving eastbound on U.S. 98, west of Old Ferry Dock Road. They said that Carson Willscy of East Point was standing on the westbound shoulder, facing traffic.

FHP said that the driver stated that he had dropped his cellphone on the floor of his car and tried to pick it up.

Troopers say that this caused the car to travel from the road, hitting Willscy. They said that Freeman didn't stop and that they later found him at a nearby home.

Willscy was transported to the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
