Paying for Parking Tickets with Canned Goods? It's Set to Happen in Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - Tallahassee city commissioners are also moving forward with an alternative way to pay for parking tickets.

Tuesday night, Commissioner Scott Maddox presented a plan, which would allow officials to accept canned food donations instead of cash, as payment for parking tickets: "Let's allow people who have a parking ticket to pay that parking ticket in canned goods or food items to help the needy people in Tallahassee, and my thought is by doing that it'll spark a little bit of giving in the holiday spirit."

The plan based on the "Food for Fines" program in Lexington, Kentucky, which runs from the middle of November through the middle of December. Last year, that program brought in more than 6,200 cans of food for people in need.

Every ten cans of food will act as a $15 credit on the donor's parking citation.
