PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) — Five former Panhandle prison guards accused of beating an inmate who spit on a guard face federal civil rights charges.

The U.S. Attorney's Office reports that a grand jury on Wednesday indicted the men on charges of conspiring to violate the civil rights of an inmate at the Northwest Florida Reception Center in Chipley.

Prosecutors also allege that a guard falsified reports to cover up the incident.

The guards are scheduled for an arrangement Feb. 26 in Panama City.

The FBI and the Florida Department of Corrections are continuing to investigate the case.
