PANAMA CITY, Fla. (RNN) - Many residents and tourist along the coast have evacuated from Panama City.

As midnight approaches, Panama City is preparing to feel the first waves from the Hurricane Michael storm surge.

Meteorologist Fred Hunter was at Panama City Beach with more Tuesday evening.

"Most who came here for vacation have gone home, and many residents have evacuated as well, Hunter said. "This storm may be the strongest to hit PanamaCity Beach since Opal, which was a Category 5.

"One of the biggest threats will be storm surge, which is expected to be 6-9 feet and further east storm surge of 9-13 feet in The Big Bend. Here on Thomas Drive this area will possibly be under water by this time tomorrow. The winds will also cause likely power outages, which may last days if not weeks.
