ATLANTA (AP) — Opponents of a bill shielding gay marriage opponents who deny people services based on their religious views are celebrating Gov. Nathan Deal's veto of the measure.
Gay-rights advocates and others held a rally Tuesday outside the Capitol. Speakers thanked Deal and urged people to continue speaking out before the next legislative session.
Conservative groups and legislative leaders have said they will try to pass a similar proposal next year.
Speakers on Tuesday also said Georgians should help protest a similar law in Mississippi and a North Carolina law that restricts protections for LGBT people.
Deal, a Republican, vetoed the Georgia bill last week, saying discrimination isn't needed to protect religious beliefs. Some companies spoke out against the measure, threatening to boycott Georgia if it became law.
