TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- The Knight Cities Foundation is one step closer to deciding who will take the prize in the first Knight Cities Challenge.

In a competition between 26 communities, 126 finalists were named today, chosen from a pool of more than 7,000 applicants.

The submitted applications were asked to focus on three drivers of city success: talent, opportunity, and engagement.

One idea from Tallahassee made the finalist list.

Tallahassee resident, Megan Doherty pitched a plan to transform bus stops to become more welcoming public spaces that improve the surrounding area, benefit businesses, and encourage people to use public transit.

Winners of the competition will be announced this spring, and will be given a share of 5 million dollars.
