THOMASVILLE, GA (WTXL) - One person is dead and four are in critical condition after an SUV collided with an empty prison bus, says deputies.
According to the Thomas County Sheriff's Office, the accident happened just after 11:45 a.m. on Monday at the intersection of Highway 84 and Gatlin Creek Road in Thomasville.
Deputies said an SUV traveling east on Highway 84 collided with a Thomas County prison van, which had no prisoners on board at the time of the crash.
Five people were in the SUV when it crashed, deputies said. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and four others were transported to Archbold Memorial Hospital in critical condition, the sheriff's office said.
Deputies said the driver of the prison van was shaken up but not injured.
A Georgia State Patrol reconstruction team is on scene attempting to figure out what happened, deputies said.
The identities of those involved have not yet been released.
