TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Community organizations gathered in Florida's capital city Thursday to raise awareness about violence against women. Instead of simply rallying or holding up picket signs, dozens supported the cause with a method that's much more unconventional --dancing.

The event was part of an international effort dubbed "One Billion Rising." One Billion Rising is a not-for-profit founded by playwright Eve Ensler, famous for The Vagina Monologues.

The "one-billion" in the title stems from the statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at approximately seven billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls.

People across the country, the state and the world danced to say no to violence against women and yes to celebrating women.

Groups from Unite Women Tallahassee, Rumbles Office Equipment Solutions, Oasis Center for Women and Girls, Pace Center for Girls Leon, Big Bend Homeless Coalition, ABJames DJ, Family Tree Community Center, Your Life Expressions, PFLAG-Tallahassee, Unity Church Eastside, Tallahassee NOW,  and The F Word @FSU participated in the hour-long event.
