DELTONA, Fla. (AP) - It was a pretty good first day on the job for Volusia County Sheriff's Deputy Brant Lickiss.

The deputy was stopped at a traffic light on Saturday afternoon when he saw a woman pull into a driveway, jump from the car and pull a child from the back seat.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/1AvozsO ) reports Lickiss was working his first full-time patrol shift in Deltona. He stopped and approached the pair, but the woman didn't answer his questions because of a language barrier. She put her hands to her own throat to indicate the child was choking.

The deputy started striking the child on the back. After three tries, a piece of hard candy flew out of the child's mouth.

A rescue crew checked the girl, who was fine.
