LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL)--A one-mile widening project on Old U.S. 41 is expected to be finished by the beginning of the new school year.
The project is paid for by sales tax money at a cost of more than $925,000. Lowndes County leaders say once it's complete, it will be a traffic relief to residents in the area and improve conditions for commuters.
During a meeting between the Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry and Lowndes County leaders on Wednesday, future projects including the three-mile widening of Lake Park-Bellville Road and improvements to the bridge on Shiloh Road at Franks Creek were discussed.
Chairman Bill Slaughter says the Lake Park-Bellville Road project would improve access and travel conditions for the Home Depot Distribution Center, Estes Distribution Center and the Lake Park Industrial Park.
Discussions about the Shiloh Road bridge at Franks Creek addressed the inconvenience to people in the area when flood waters require the bridge on Shiloh Road to be closed.
