GEORGETOWN, OH (FOX19) - Some teachers and staff members will be armed when Georgetown Exempted Village students return to class next week,
The school district adopted a resolution to allow certified teachers and staff members to carry concealed guns.
The resolution says armed personnel would “discretely carry weapons while on duty at school” and provide a stronger level of security without disrupting students and staff.
Superintendent Christopher Burrows said there's overwhelming support for the program among the Georgetown community. The board unanimously voted in favor of the resolution in April.
Teachers and staff who are authorized to carry weapons must maintain a concealed carry license issued by the State of Ohio and undergo training with the Georgetown Police department.
A grant covers the cost of training and the district will pay $1,500 for practice ammunition.
The armed employees are volunteers whose identities will not be disclosed, the board said.
Georgetown Exempted Village Schools are located in Brown County. About 1,100 students are enrolled in the elementary school and junior and senior high schools.
