BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (AP) - Ohio's attorney general says a man fatally shot by police in a Wal-Mart store in a Dayton suburb was carrying an air rifle.
Attorney General Mike DeWine released a brief statement Thursday after the state's crime bureau said it had taken over the investigation of the shooting.
Police in Beavercreek have said 22-year-old John Crawford waved a rifle at customers Tuesday night and was fatally shot when he wouldn't drop the weapon.
DeWine says the man had a "variable pump air rifle" manufactured by Crosman. The owner's manual for the MK-177 BB/Pellet rifle warns that misuse can result in "serious injury or death."
The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation has sent a crime scene unit and special investigators to Beavercreek. The state says Beavercreek's police chief requested an independent probe.
