TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - The Florida State Department of Transportation has announced their intention to put nearly $50 million toward trails in the Sunshine State.

The money will be used to construct 11 bike and pedestrian trail systems and should add close to 20 miles of trail to the state outdoor Sun Trail Network.

34 other projects are planned to make sure that the trails have no negative environmental impacts.

Governor Scott said, "Florida is proud to be an outdoors state, and our many incredible bicycle, pedestrian and multi-use trails are great activities for Floridians and visitors to enjoy. I am proud to join FDOT in celebrating this investment today as we work to provide more safe recreational opportunities for families across our state."

The Sun Trail Network extends across 21 counties and is partially paved and entirely separate from roadways built for car traffic.
