TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - It's a big weekend at Florida State University with Homecoming underway.

Thousands of Seminoles, past and present, are on campus to celebrate and with so many people coming to Tallahassee, officials are urging safety above everything else.

Florida State is in full celebration mode. The annual Homecoming parade attracted thousands to campus. It's a weekend packed with events and packed with people.

"It's students. It's parents," said Major James Russell with the FSU Police Department. "It's people who live here in town who are enjoying the festivities."

As with any home football game or big event, FSU Police say they're keeping a watchful eye but it's also on the public to be aware, especially during Homecoming.

"There may be parties," said Major Russell. "There may be people going out to establishments, and there may be alcohol involved."

That's what worries the Northwest Florida chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or M.A.D.D.

"They're just enjoying what the party has available and is involved in that -- and they're not thinking," said Kristen Allen who is with the Northwest Florida chapter of M.A.D.D.

Two weeks ago, Andrew Coffey was found dead at an off-campus party. With the loss of a student, officials are urging everyone this weekend to make smart choices.

"Your actions and what you decide to do can have consequences, not only for you, but for other people, for your family, for other people's families," said Major Russell.

"You don't want another tragedy to happen, due to something that's 100 percent preventable," said Allen.

FSU Police and M.A.D.D. of Northwest Florida strongly encourage people to find reliable and safe transportation to and from events and of course, not to drink if you're under the age of 21.
