TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - November 1st marked the open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act.

So far, sign-ups and traffic are strong according to government officials. This year, the length of the enrollment period is cut in half compared to 2016.

The executive director of the Florida Blue Center in Tallahassee says locally, the early surge is continuing into the second week of the enrollment period. According to officials, the number of people who signed up for plans more than doubled on the first day.

They say the Republican attention to repeal the affordable care act may have contributed to the increased enrollment numbers.

Daniel Vermette, the executive director of the Florida Blue Center of Tallahassee said "we're here to help and we invite the community to come spend time with us."

"Come sit with one of our nurses and they can help you with a one on one health coaching, diabetes prevention, stress less, nutrition classes," said Vermette.

Registered nurses and certified health coaches are available at Florida Blue Center for free during the enrollment period to help members find the best plan.

The last day to sign up is on December 15th.
