TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - As the first major cold front makes its way through the Big Bend and south Georgia area, officials are reminding you about safety tips when using space heaters.

Portable heating devices are a popular way to cut down on the cost of your heating bill.

There are two types of space heaters: ceramic and oil-filled. Ceramic heaters pose less of a danger, since there is no hot oil, but they do have a coil that heats up.

There are a few things to remember when using them: for starters make sure it's not near your bed, clothes, or anything that could catch fire.

Always remember to never use an extension cord with portable heaters.

The device needs to always be plugged directly into an outlet that is 120 volts or more.
