TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (The News Service of Florida) - A record 47 million Americans are expected to travel more than 50 miles this week for Independence Day, according to AAA Auto Club.

In Florida, nearly 2.4 million people plan to go on vacation, a 6.3 percent increase from last year.

Tuesday, July 3 is expected to be the busiest day of the week on the roads, as 88 percent of those traveling will go by car. Drivers will find gas prices 50 cents higher than last summer, but prices have fallen over the past month.

AAA's W.D. Williams says everyone traveling should leave early and pack their patience.

"Plan ahead. Whether you are going to fly or you're going to drive, expect the roadways to be crowded," said Williams. "Expect the airports to be crowded. Give yourself more time than you would otherwise. Remember, it's a vacation. It's not a race."

While gas prices are up, the cost of airfare is down this summer. The most popular Independence Day travel destination for 2018 is Orlando.
