FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Officials say they're investigating the cause of a fire a Broward County's main jail.
The Broward Sheriff's Office reports in a news release that the fire started Thursday morning in the jail's laundry room.
Jail deputies responded with fire equipment and evacuated staff and inmates. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to put out the fire. Two people were treated for smoke inhalation.
The release says command staff immediately placed the jail on lockdown, and personnel from other jail facilities were brought in to help.
Approximately 100 inmates were bused to a Pompano Beach detention facility, and new jail bookings were temporarily handled at the secondary location.
Magistrate court was cancelled for the afternoon.
