MOORE, Okla. (AP) — The extent of damage from Monday's tornado in Oklahoma is becoming clearer today.
Officials say the tornado destroyed or damaged as many as 13,000 homes, and that it may have caused $2 billion in overall damage.
The monstrous tornado barreled through the Oklahoma City suburb, demolishing an elementary school and reducing homes to piles of rubble. The disaster zone stretches more than 17 miles and the tornado was on the ground for 40 minutes.
State authorities say the 24 people known to have died included two infants.
Six adults remain unaccounted for. Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management Director Albert Ashwood says it isn't known whether those people had just "walked off" their properties or could still be found in the rubble.
President Barack Obama is planning to visit Oklahoma on Sunday to see the damage and meet with survivors and first responders.
