TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Leon County grand jury is clearing officers responsible for killing a man who lit his house on fire and then ambushed deputies who arrived on the scene.
The grand jury on Wednesday said all the officers involved in the November incident conducted themselves "heroically."
Curtis Wade Holley shot and killed Deputy Christopher Smith as he arrived at the house fire. Holley wounded another deputy before he was killed in a gun battle outside his home.
Authorities said Holley held "anti-government, anti-establishment" views and had previously threatened law enforcement.
Holley was killed by Tallahassee Police Officer Scott Angulo. Angulo lived nearby and responded to the scene after hearing gunfire.
The grand jury concluded that Angulo acted courageously and prevented additional injuries or deaths.
