Officer, wife dead in Statesboro murder-suicide

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) - A police officer and his wife are dead after what Statesboro Police say appears to be a murder-suicide at Copper Beech Townhomes on Sunday.

Around 2:36 a.m., the Statesboro Police Department responded to possible shots fired at the townhomes. When officers arrived, they found Advanced Patrol Officer Ian Huggins with multiple gunshot wounds.

Moments after officers entered the home, Rebecca Boyett Huggins, his wife, shot herself.

Both were transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center. Life-saving efforts were not successful.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office provided assistance at the scene. The Statesboro Police Department has turned the investigation over to the GBI.
