BAINBRIDGE, GA (WTXL) - A Bainbridge Public Safety officer is being honored at Bainbrige City Hall Tuesday after he rescued nine people while off duty last weekend.

Akins was traveling on US-27 and heading to church when he saw a crash involving a burning church van. After calling 911 to report the accident, Akins jumped into action, according to witnesses at the scene.

Akins rescued all 9 of the elderly citizens one-by-one out of the overturned vehicle.

"I jumped out of the car, ran to the passenger side, the passenger in the front seat was trapped. I looked back behind the passenger seat and there was an elderly woman, she was turned upside down" said Officer Akins.

Adkins will be honored at the Bainbridge City Council meeting today at 6 p.m.
