CHICAGO (AP) — President Barack Obama is telling Democratic Party donors that despite improvements in the economy, Americans still need help from their government. He says he wants to direct federal spending to public works projects and early childhood education.

He said he is looking for Republicans "for whom compromise is not a dirty word." But he said he wants Democrats to regain control of the House.

Obama was in his hometown of Chicago for fundraisers for the congressional arm of the Democratic Party.

About 150 supporters, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, attended at a reception at a downtown hotel, where tickets prices started at $1,000 per person. Obama was holding a high-dollar event later where dinner tickets started at $10,000 and went up to $32,400 — the legal maximum.
