North Atlantic right whales almost extinct

(WTXL) - The outlook for the endangered North Atlantic right whale is not looking good.

It's the end of the whale's four-month long winter birthing season, and researchers say they haven't seen any newborns in the calving areas off the coasts of Florida and Georgia.

According to Fisheries Service, there are only about 450 remaining.

A senior wildlife biologist with Georgia's Department of Natural Resources said last year the number of dead right whales washing up on Atlantic beaches surged to 17.

He calls the lack of births and rising number of deaths "not sustainable."
