ALBANY, GA (WALB) - For the second year in a row, parents will have to spend a little more money when buying back to school items, because Georgia’s back-to-school sales tax-free weekend is not happening.
The annual tax-free weekend allowed families and teachers to save the state's 4% sales tax on school supplies.
A bill to bring back the tax-free weekend and prevent Georgia shoppers from crossing state lines to buy back-to-school supplies failed to pass this year in the General Assembly.
Legislators criticized the tax-free weekend for its impact on the state's budget. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the tax-free weekend can cost state and local governments roughly $70 million in lost revenue.
Georgia's neighboring states are still holding their back-to-school tax-free weekends. Alabama's tax-free weekend is July 20-22. Florida and South Carolina are both having their tax-free weekend August 3-5, and Tennessee's tax-free weekend is July 27-29.
