TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) -- Tallahassee has added another station to its fire fighting arsenal. Fire station 16 held its grand opening today to celebrate the new $2.9 million "state of the art" facility.

While the new station is energy efficient and updated with more modern technology, there is an important reason it was built in the area.

Fire trucks at the new fire station are expected to make it to areas around Buck Lake and Capital Circle NE in a matter of minutes. The increased response time of those living closer to this brand new station also has financial benefit to home owners.

Mike Bellamy of the Tallahassee Fire Department says that being closer to a fire station could save homeowner's hundreds. "Insurance policies are based on you're five driving miles from a fire house and a thousand feet from a hydrant", said Bellamy. "We've identified that there are hundreds, if not thousands of homes to the east of our station that will now be within that five mile corridor."

The new station can stand up to category three hurricane force winds and it includes an advanced door system to allow trucks to exit easier.
