WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTXL) -- A new study released this week says nearly half of American workers wasted some of their paid time off.
Oxford Economics conducted the study for U.S. Travel Association. It says 40% of American workers who receive paid time off used only a portion of what they were allowed. They say Americans left an average of 3.2 PTO days; that equals about 429 million unused days among all U.S. Workers.
The study also cited 34 percent of employees indicating their employer neither encouraging nor discouraging leave. Seventeen percent of managers surveyed say they considered those employees who take all of their leave to be less dedicated.
The study was based on a survey of 971 employees, 700 of whom receive PTO as part of their benefits package, conducted between September and October 2013.
Economically, those behind the study say if workers had used all of their time off available, it would pump an additional $160 billion into the economy, adding $21 billion in tax revenues, and help spur the creation of 1.2 million jobs.
