TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Legislature is considering new measures to restrict abortions.
A bill that would require a 24-hour waiting period and force patients to make two trips to a clinic has the best chance of passage. Another bill requiring abortion providers to have hospital admission privileges would close many abortion clinics, but has less chance of surviving a court challenge.
Backers say the bills are aimed at protecting women, but some acknowledge restricting access is part of their strategy.
Pro-abortion rights forces say such bills are about politics, not about women's health.
Another bill filed unsuccessfully every year since 2010 would essentially ban abortions, challenging the Supreme Court's Roe v Wade ruling legalizing the procedure.
