TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The 2015 'Children's National Disaster' report card finds 18 states still lack basic protections for children.
Each year since 2008, Save the Children has assessed all 50 states and the District of Columbia on the emergency plans for the 69 million children who attend school or child care centers nationwide.
According to their findings -- this year, 18 states can still do much more to protect children, including Florida and Georgia.
Three of the standards they looked at focus on child care, and require facilities to develop detailed, written emergency plans that cover evacuation, family-child reunification and assisting children with special needs.
They say eight states, including Georgia, have failed to meet all of these standards. And, according to the report, Florida is not meeting the evacuation/relocation plan requirement, or planning for children with special needs.
