TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A new pharmacy in Tallahassee's Southside brings much-needed resources to the community after the neighborhood Walgreens closed last year.
This pharmacy does things a little differently.
Mail-Meds Clinical Pharmacy is expanding operations from Fort Myers to be closer to North Florida customers.
"To be partnered with Care Point and to provide a specific focus here in the Tallahassee market is a fantastic opportunity for our company," said Mark Theobald, the president and CEO of Mail-Meds Clinical Pharmacy.
For pharmacy manager Carol Broxton, the move is really a homecoming.
"I grew up in Wakulla County, and I had a dream," said Carol Broxton, the regional manager of Mail-Meds Clinical Pharmacy. "Fourteen years old, always wanted to be a pharmacist, and I was able to come here to FAMU."
Mail-Meds operates on the second floor of Care Point Health and Wellness Center, not far from FAMU.
Broxton said having a pharmacy back in the Southside gives residents a more personal approach to healthcare.
"Where I'm needed, that's where I'm going to be and service my patients -- and being here allows me to do that," Broxton said.
One of the ways Mail-Meds is different from a typical pharmacy is using this technology. It auto-fills prescriptions, up to 150 an hour.
"We align all the patients' dispensing dates, so they get their medications on a single day of the month," said Theobald. "In addition to that, we offer the opportunity to receive medications in traditional amber vials like any pharmacy or in what we call our Med-Box personalized pill box system."
Mail-Meds' expansion has added nine full-time jobs in Tallahassee. That's in addition to 11 new positions created by Care Point Health and Wellness.
Care Point is open to all residents and accepts patients with or without health insurance.
