TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A New Leaf Market employee is behind bars after an investigation revealed he was stealing other employees' paychecks and depositing them into his account.

Jared Johnson was arrested and charged with multiple counts of forgery, counterfeiting, grand theft, and depositing with intent to defraud. He was additionally charged with resisting arrest.

According to complaint documents, investigators were alerted to the crime on May 30. The complainant wrote in an online report that an employee's check had been stolen and cashed by someone else.

Several weeks later on June 12, documents say New Leaf Market was contacted by the King Food Store on South Adams Street who told them that Johnson was trying to cash check issued to another employee.

That day, the store provided surveillance video of Johnson coming into the store days earlier and taking envelops from where employees' checks are placed for pick up.

The manager also confirmed that Johnson didn't have a paycheck waiting on the day the surveillance video was taken.

Documents say Johnson again tried to cash someone's check on June 12, this time at the Time Saver store on Brevard Street. The cashier called police about the stolen check who then collected the check as evidence.

The next day, officers spotted Johnson walking near West Virginia Street but when they approached, Johnson lied about his identity and ran away.

According to court documents, Johnson cashed another stolen check the following day at the NA Store on West Brevard Street.

In the end, Investigators determined that Johnson had stolen four employees' checks and had successfully cashed three of them. The amount of money deposited into Johnson's account totaled $1315.03.

Based on the evidence, a warrant was issued for Johnson arrest on June 15. He was taken into custody on July 12.
