ATLANTA (AP) - Dozens of new Georgia laws become effective as July begins, including changes to privileges for police facing a grand jury.

As of July 1, law enforcement before a grand jury for using deadly force won't be able to make an unchallenged statement. They also can't be present for the entire proceeding.

This summer, state officials also will begin reviewing applications and make recommendations to Gov. Nathan Deal for two new seats on the state's Supreme Court.

Other changes include new grants for organizations that discourage abortion by providing services to pregnant women and several laws aimed at helping people with serious diseases get treatment.

A law blasted by open records advocates also takes effect July 1. College athletics departments get 90 days, instead of three, to respond to most requests.
