JEFFERSON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The new superintendent for Jefferson County schools is facing some major uphill challenges, to include keeping one elementary school in the county from closing.
Marianne Arbulu was selected as the county's newest superintendent of schools after the general elections a week ago. Arbulu will not be sworn in and begin her duties until Nov. 22, giving her very little wiggle room before a budget for the county's school is due to be in place.
She only has until Nov. 30 to solidify the budget, but that's not her only concern. Jefferson County Elementary School is also facing a potential closure, but Arbulu said that she will try to keep from consolidating schools.
However, she said that if the better option for the district is to close the elementary, then she will consider transitioning everyone to the Jefferson County Middle-High School.
Though Arbulu acknowledged that she had a very tight deadline to get the budget in place, she aims to keep "realistic" about the whole situation.
