CAIRO, Ga. (WTXL) - Cairo is making history as the city's first African-American mayor gets sworn in Monday night.
Mayor elect Brooker Gainer hopes his time in office brings unity to the south Georgia city.
It's a big night for Cairo. For the first time in the city's 183 year history, they'll have an African American mayor.
Voters in the Grady County town elected Booker T. Gainor last November with 57 percent of the vote.
Census data shows the population of Cairo is more than 47 percent black, so Gainor serving as mayor means nearly half the town will now have a leader with their same background, a leader who looks like them a leader they can relate to.
The swearing in ceremony starts at 6 Monday night, in the city commission chambers.
