TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A new advertisement may come on to your TV starting today, opposing bills that would allow guns on school campuses.
The ad is titled "Backpacks, not bullets," and will be on-air until March 13.
In the ad, you heard Wayne LaPierre, the National Rifle Association Executive Director, at a 1999 NRA convention saying the guns would never be mixed with schools. The advertisement asks why the change is happening now if it was not okay then.
It was created by the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and the Florida Chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
They're urging Floridians to contact their legislators and speak out against the bills that would allow guns on school campuses.
State Senator Greg Evers is behind one of the bills at issue. He says the way the law is now is not effective, and that he filed the bill because "those gun-free zones are just an incubator for folks that won't follow the law, that actually bring guns into gun-free zones where the law-abiding citizens don't have any guns." His bill would allow concealed handguns on college campuses.
There are a total of 5 bills, including the one introduced by Senator Evers, that will be considered this legislative session addressing guns at schools.
The group will also be trying to bring more awareness to their efforts against the bills on Monday at 10 a.m. A coalition of moms, students, law enforcement officials, and more will be gathering at the state capitol voicing their opposition.
At the rally, they'll be delivering 12,000 postcards to legislators with the message "Backpacks and bullets don't mix."
