ATLANTA (AP) - Lawmakers are negotiating over whether Georgia students should be allowed to carry guns on college campuses.
Senior Republicans in the House are backing a plan that would allow students with a license to carry a weapon to take firearms onto parts of campuses, though not into student housing or sporting events. Top officials in the state's higher education system oppose the idea.
People must now be 21 years old to get a license to carry a gun.
Republican Rep. John Meadows said Thursday that he is offering a compromise that would allow students younger than 21 to carry a weapon if they have military training. Students ages 21 to 25 could carry weapons if they completed an eight-hour training course.
It's unclear whether senators will accept it.
