2nd Day in Resentence Hearing for Convicted Child Killer

Posted

MIAMI (AP) — A resentencing hearing is in its second day for a South Florida man convicted as a teenager of fatally stabbing his friend in a middle school bathroom.

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge John Schlesinger will hear expert testimony and evidence Thursday in the case of Michael Hernandez, now 26. Hernandez was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 2004 slaying of 14-year-old Jaime Gough.

The new hearing was ordered after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that juveniles could not automatically be sentenced to life without chance of parole.

Much of Wednesday's hearing focused on how Hernandez was obsessed with becoming a serial killer as a teenager and continued his fascination in prison. Hernandez's father testified his son needs mental health help and would do better outside prison walls.
