CLEVELAND (AP) — The mother of a 2-month-old who police suspect was beaten to death by a friend's 11-year-old daughter says the girl wanted the baby to stay overnight with her and her mother.

Trina Whitehead of Cleveland says the 11-year-old's mother called her around 9:30 p.m. Thursday and said they were close by and that they wanted to keep Zuri Whitehead overnight at their home in the suburb of Wickliffe.

Police say Zuri died during surgery the following morning after being severely beaten. The 11-year-old is being held in a juvenile detention center after being charged with murder.

Whitehead says she and the 11-year-old's mother were best friends and that she never saw any behavior from the child that concerned her.
