TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Several years ago the Tallahassee National Cemetery was just a concept.

Now, the cemetery is preparing for a groundbreaking and dedication ceremony just in time for Memorial Day.

On May 22, the cemetery will hold the event, and they are asking for your help. If you want to volunteer your time for the big day, you can call (850)570-6159.

Cemetery officials anticipate it will only be 6 more months before the first burial at the cemetery.

The initial phase of construction will provide 6,000 grave sites in the 250 acre plot.

The cemetery will eventually serve the burial needs of 83,000 veterans as well as 35 counties from Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
