GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — An 11-year-old boy is out of the hospital two weeks after a 5-foot-long eastern diamondback rattlesnake bit his leg.

Ben Smith left the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital on Saturday and is recovering at home.

He was running through the woods while attending a friend's birthday party in Newberry when the snake bit him on May 30. The Gainesville Sun (http://bit.ly/14HA7aJ ) reports Smith received 80 vials of antivenin during his 15-day hospital stay.

The boy walked out of the hospital, carrying a Gators football helmet signed by doctors and nurses. His mother, Heather Smith, says she's thankful for the care he received.

Doctors say he shouldn't have any long-term issues. But he's need some physical therapy for his leg.
